BRITISH sprinter Zharnel Hughes set the fasted time in the world this year with a storming 9.91sec run in the 100metres.

Hughes, 22, has now arrived as one of the quickest men on the planet with a brilliant display to come home ahead of a stacked field in Jamaica.

And afterwards the rising star claimed he could have gone even quicker had it not been for an equipment problem at the start.

Hughes said: “It was a great race.

“Unfortunately, my blocks slipped when I pushed off so it hampered my start a little bit.

"But I am in great form so I regained my composure and just relaxed while maintaining my phases and I came through successfully.”

In blasting his way to victory over highly-rated American Noah Lyles and Jamaica's Yohan Blake, Hughes continued his electric run of form.

He only set a personal best of 10.01 in the Caribbean in February but smashing the ten-second barrier in such fashion is a huge statement.

In doing so, he has joined James Dasolu as second on the all-time list of fastest times ever run by a British sprinter.

Former Olympic champion Linford Christie is the only man to have run quicker, when he clocked 9.87sec in Stuttgart in 1993.

Now Hughes is in a position to be challenging for major international honours as he continues to improve under coach Glen Mills.

And he will be targeting his first title later this year at the European Champships in Berlin, which begin on August 7.
