DANNY CIPRIANI is set to start an England Test for the first time in ten years as Eddie Jones fights to save his job.

Playmaker Cips, 30, will get the nod ahead of George Ford at fly-half in Saturday’s Third Test in Cape Town.

Cipriani had a 13-minute run out as sub in last week’s 23-12 defeat.

But his last start among 15 Red Rose caps was way back in 2008 — when the Springboks ran up a record 42-6 Twickenham win over Martin Johnson’s side.

South Africa have this series in the bag after wins in Johannesburg and Bloemfontein.

So Jones plans to roll the dice in a bid to halt his desperate run of six defeats.

The Aussie, who names his XV today, said: “Danny has got fitter and he’s understanding that there’s a role to play in the team — and he can play it.

“I’ve been impressed by his diligence and his desire to be part of the team. Both Danny and George Ford have got great attributes.

“They are both skilful with the ball, they both kick well, they both pass well.

“From both of them, I’d like to see a bit more of a running game. So we’re just assessing who is going to be the best player for this weekend.”

But Jones is unlikely to make wholesale changes even though the series is already lost.

He added: “We’ve got 400 caps — that’s a side barely out of kindergarten. To think we could experiment even more is ludicrous.”

Prop Joe Marler will start at loosehead prop after Mako Vunipola dashed home to be at the birth of his son, Jacob.

And Wasps’ Nathan Hughes wears No 8 with Mako’s brother Billy Vunipola’s tour ended by a broken arm in Bloemfontein.

Storm clouds have gathered over Jones after England’s worst run since Andy Robinson lost seven Tests in a row and eight of nine 12 years ago. The RFU suits continue to hide and refuse to speak about Jones’ future in public but the Aussie is doing his own fire-fighting.

Jones, 58, was not due to face the media yesterday but put himself up for a grilling.

He said: “When things are tough, you’ve got to front up.

“You guys all want to hear from the head coach and it’s my responsibility to front up.”
