MO FARAH can be a major threat to the world’s best marathon man Eliud Kipchoge in the run-up to Tokyo 2020.

Farah finished third in his first serious outing at the London Marathon, clocking 2hr 6min 21sec to break the British record which had stood for 33 years.

Olympic champ Kipchoge, from Kenya, won Sunday’s race in 2:04.17.

And Farah’s coach Gary Lough believes the Brit, who won four Olympic gold medals at 5,000m and 10,000m, can be a threat at next year’s World Championships in Qatar and the Tokyo Olympics.

Lough said: “Eliud is the best marathon runner ever but I think Mo can get to a similar level of number one or two in the world.

“If you put him into a championship environment like next year in Doha or certainly 2020 in Tokyo, I definitely think Mo should be someone people have major concerns about.”

“If it was just ticking boxes, or to do it because it was expected of him, I was not really sure it was the thing for me.

“But I could see the real desire. He wants to be the best that he can be and the best he can be is going to be one of the best in the world.

“A time of 2:03, 2:04 is realistic for him. Some of the stuff that he has done in training is incredible.

“There is some stuff we’ve got to add and he learned a lot of lessons on Sunday in terms of drinking and water bottles.”

Farah missed his drink early on at a water station, picking up the wrong bottle at the hottest London Marathon on record before complaining about staff taking pictures instead of helping him.
