Ohuruogu, who announced she would be hanging up her spikes as the trials for the European Championships kicked off, said: "As I won't be competing I feel it is a good time to announce my retirement.

"I didn't feel ready to retire after last season but a combination of my studies and a niggling injury restricted how much training I was able to do this year.

"I end my career with four Olympic medals and five World Championships medals."

The Londoner was given a one-year ban for missing three out-of-competition drug tests in 2006 and her participation in the Beijing Games of 2008 was under threat at one stage.

A lifetime ban from Olympic competition from the British Olympic Association (BOA) followed, but Ohuruogu successfully appealed the decision, and briefly threatened to compete for a different country.

Her winning time of 49.62 seconds in the Bird's Nest was the fastest time of the year, pipping pre-race favourite Sanya Richards and Shericka Williams to the top spot on the podium.

After being retrospecitvely awarded bronze for the 4x400m relay in 2008, she claimed her final Olympic medal at Rio 2016 in the same event, running the final leg to win bronze alongside Eilidh Doyle, Anyika Onuora and Emily Diamond.
