CHELSEA have stepped up their chase for Gonzalo Higuain and will meet the player's agent on Wednesday, according to reports.

New boss Maurizio Sarri wants to waste no time in landing his own transfer targets after his appointment was officially revealed on Saturday.

Landing a top centre forward remains a top priority after Alvaro Morata flopped with just 11 league goals in his debut season.

And Higuain, who had a record-breaking season under Sarri when the duo were at Napoli, fits the bill.

The Juventus hitman found the form of his life as he ended the 2015/16 campaign with 36 league goals from 35 starts.

Italian journalist Giulia Stronati claims Chelsea chiefs will finalise a contract with the player this week after agreeing a £44million fee with Juventus.

His new three-year contract is believed to be worth £6.6m-a-year before bonuses.

Juventus are open to selling the Argentine to raise money after the £99m arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal superstar will lead the line next season, forcing Higuain towards the exit door.

His form tailed off for the Serie A champions last season as he finished the campaign with 16 - eight less than the year before.

If Chelsea do complete the signing of Higuain then it could mean the end of Morata and Olivier Giroud's short spells at the club.

World Cup winner Giroud has just 12 months left on his contract and could be another casualty of the new regime.
