The chain-smoking Italian boss put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Blues, and they're hoping that will be the start of a beautiful relationship.

In fact, Chelsea want Sarri to be their Fergie, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

During their early meetings, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia reportedly told the former Napoli boss they want him to have a long tenure like the legendary Scot.

Ferguson managed Manchester United for 26 years from 1986 to 2013, winning the Champions League twice, 13 league titles and five FA Cups.

He retired as a champion, when his United side won the Premier League in his final season.

Chelsea announced on Friday that they had sacked their manager Antonio Conte after just two years in charge.

He joins a long list of managers who have held the post for a short time before getting the bullet.

Sarri is the 12th manager Chelsea have appointed since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

They are currently locked in a battle over Conte's compensation, disputing the £9m pay-off for the final year of his contract.

The club are arguing his text gaffe that led to Diego Costa's departure, where he allegedly informed the striker that he was not wanted without consulting Roman Abramovich, reduced the Spaniard's value when they sold him to Atletico Madrid for £67million.

So far, Chelsea have paid off managers to the tune of £90m in compensation since Abramovich's revolution began.
