FERNANDO ALONSO denies involvement in the major shake-up at McLaren while chief executive Zak Brown says the Spaniard was addressed in the decision making.

The two-time world champion is seen as a leader in the team, despite his future in F1 and position at McLaren next season being in serious doubt.

The former powerhouses of F1 continue to be far away from their previous dominance but they are hoping to keep the Spaniard onboard as they look to return to their glory days.

This week McLaren saw under-fire Eric Boullier quit as racing director after joining the team in 2014.

The Frenchman oversaw the team's worst run in their 52-year history - as the team have failed to qualify in the top ten all season.

Chief exec, Brown said: "I have spoken with all the drivers, Fernando obviously has an immense amount of experience, he has driven for us twice, Ferrari, Renault, Benetton and I believe racer instinct is important in a fast paced, racing environment.

"He has been at the centre of some great racing teams, so I think it would be a mistake not to tap into his experience and knowledge of how he has seen different teams operate."

He added: "He is definitely one of the leaders of the team."

But Alonso has denied being involved in the decision making at McLaren, despite Brown's comments.

Alonso said: "I wasn't consulted.

"I was informed about all the changes, and all the new possibilities, as Stoffel [Vandoorne] has been informed."

Brown said he could not confirm who will be driving next season as Alonso's future hangs in the balance.

Brown added: “I think anything’s possible as far as what Fernando could drive next year.

“Right now, we’re very focused on being in the moment. He definitely wants to win the triple crown. We’d like to do that with him.

“I’d say anything is possible for next year, but given where everything is right now, we’re not quite shifted towards who’s driving what for next year.”
