Formula E: Jean-Eric Vergne begins New York double header from back of the grid as Sam Bird struggles in qualifying

JEAN-ERIC VERGNE will start from the back of the grid in New York ahead of the title showdown against Sam Bird.


In the first race of the double header this weekend, the Frenchman had his lap time cancelled after switching to full power too early in the session.

Bird, who trails Vergne by 23 points in the final weekend of the season, starts 14th on the grid after a disappointing session.



Sebastien Buemi starts on pole after posting a time of 1:13.911, with Jaguar's Mitch Evans second on the grid.


Meanwhile Brit Oliver Turvey will not take part in the race due to a wrist injury he picked up from a crash in FP2, which ruled also ruled him out of qualifying.


Alex Lynn starts one place ahead his DS Virgin teammate Bird in 13th, while Techeetah's Andre Lotterer also had his time wiped for the same reasons as his teammate Vergne.

Techeetah's team principle said: "It's obviously incredibly disappointing for both drivers after all the preperation we've done. We came here trying to be super clean and make sure everything was super reliable.



"We made a small update to the code for reliability reasons and that's what has caught us out - just by very, small margins - but that's how it works when you're fighting for championships.


"We'll just have to soldier on and we'll see how we go in the race."
