The DS Virgin driver trailed Vergne by 23 points ahead of the season finale and had to beat his rival by seven points on the first race of the double header.

But Vergne's fifth place finish proved to be enough as he celebrated wildly in the paddock after the race with his Techeetah teammates.

After winning the title, an emotional Vergne said: "Really I have no idea what it means to me to be champion – I need more time.

“I honestly didn’t know, when I crossed the line I had won and I didn’t want to look at the screen.

“All I know is that it’s a good feeling. I have waited all season for this.”

Lucas Di Grassi won the first race in Brooklyn after racing wheel to wheel with his Audi teammate Daniel Abt - with Sebastien Buemi in third.

The Audi pair's fierce racing led to Di Grassi pulling off a risky move to take the lead, which left Abt furious after the race.

The German manufacturers' dominant display takes the teams' championship to the final day as they compete with Techeetah for the trophy.

Vergne started at the back after his qualifying time was wiped, while Bird's disappointing lap saw him start in 14th.

Bird made good progress and was up five places after as many laps.

But as the race progressed, Vergne and his Techeetah teammate Andre Lotterer worked their way through the field from the back.

On lap 14, Lotterer passed Bird and then backed up the two DS Virgin drivers which allowed Vergne to close in on his rival.

And after just two laps, he made the decisive moves and overtook Bird and Lotterer which led to him winning the title.

Mitch Evans started second on the grid but a mechanical failure saw him fail to pull away from the start as he retired from the race immediately.

Meanwhile DS Virgins' afternoon went from bad to worse when Alex Lynn slammed into the wall after losing grip and spinning out of control.

It was a positive afternoon for French newcomer Tom Dillman who finished fourth.

The 29-year-old showed great skill as he fights for a seat alongside Felippe Massa next season at Venturi.
