RUSSELL KNOX holed TWO monster putts on the 18th green to snatch a dramatic play-off victory at the Irish Open, and storm back into the Ryder Cup picture.
The Scottish battler was controversially overlooked for a wild card two years ago when his two wins included a World Golf Championship triumph, while he was also pipped by Rory McIlroy’s sensational finish at this event in 2016.

Another runner-up finish in last week’s French Open, on the back of a final round 65, showed he was running back into form at the perfect time, with the Scottish Open and the Open itself coming up next.
But Knox, 33, had to do it the hard way. He kept big-hitting New Zealander Ryan Fox at bay by holing a 40-footer for birdie at the 72nd hole – and repeating the feat at the first extra hole.
Fox still had a seven footer for the title in regulation play, only to see it shave the hole. And his eight footer to match Knox in overtime cruelly horseshoed out of the cup.
A jubilant Knox said he was putting so well he actually told himself not to aim for the hole – just to take a brief look at the target and then pull the trigger!

He added: “After the way I putted in France and over the first three days here I genuinely wasn't looking at the hole – just taking a quick glance and trusting myself to react the right way.
“It was incredible to find myself in almost exactly the same spot on the first extra hole after making that monster putt about half an hour earlier.
“I said to my caddie we’ve already holed this putt once – how hard can it be to do it again? But it was an unbelievable feeling when it dropped in, although you have to feel sorry for Ryan after he played so well too.
“I was so close to winning this in 2016 and then 2017 wasn’t a great year for me. But I worked hard, and I got it back.

“Holding this trophy makes up for all the hours of practice, all the misses, and all the bad moments. They’re all taken care of, because this is what we play golf for.
“I was way off the pace in Ryder Cup terms a few weeks ago, and I knew I needed to win at least once and have a few good finishes to get myself into contention. These last two weeks have been the perfect start.
“Obviously, being Scottish, I’d love to win next week, and I also fancy the Open at Carnoustie the following week. But I’m not greedy – I’ll settle for this for now.”
