US Open: Ian Poulter’s charge halted by nightmare triple bogey late in second round in New York

IAN POULTER suffered an incredible meltdown just when he was poised to turn up the heat on world No 1 Dustin Johnson at the US Open.
Poulter was breathing down Johnson’s neck as a birdie at his 16th hole, the notorious par three seventh, took him to within a shot of the lead.

There seemed little danger when the English ace tugged his approach to the eighth into a greenside bunker – but that was the start of a series of calamities that saw him crash to a triple bogey seven.
Poulter skulled his bunker shot over the green into an area of wasteland, and made things a lot worse by duffing his chip shot into a patch of gnarly rough short of the green.
He only just managed to find the edge of the putting surface from that awful lie with his fifth shot, and he needed two putts before ending the agony.
Poulter looked shell-shocked as he plummeted from three under par to level, and he dropped another shot after a lesser spot of bunker trouble at the last.

That left him in a tie for fourth place, along with fellow Englishmen Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, and Poulter insisted he will be ready to repair the damage when the third round gets under way.
He commented: “Finishing like that leaves a sour taste, but I played dome great golf to get to three under par in the first place. So when I get over the frustration there will be plenty of positives to focus on.
“If you had offered me a share of fifth place going into the weekend before the tournament started I would probably have taken it – but I wouldn’t have taken it before the last two holes.

“At that point I was looking to chase down Dustin Johnson, who was only a shot ahead of me, but two poor swings with a seven iron changed that.
“Obviously I made matters worse by thinning the bunker shot, but on this course you can very quickly find yourself in deep bother, and that’s what happened to me.
“I’ll hit a few seven irons on the range to get it out of my system, and then I’ll look ahead to having some fun over the weekend.

“You can’t let something like that throw you off completely. If it’s going to happen, far better to it in the second round than the fourth, when there’s no time to fight back.
“Overall, my game is in great shape, and it feels really good to be in contention. I’ve got to look at the bigger picture and appreciate how good it feels to be up there hunting again in a major.”
Rose also endured a disappointing finish with bogeys at his last two holes.
He and Poulter would love to have enjoyed the sort of finish Rory McIlroy out together.
He played the back nine in four under par to salvage a second round 70 – a ten shot improvement on his grim opening effort.
McIlroy still missed the cut for the third year in a row at this event – joining Tiger Woods on ten over par – and is going to have to seriously rethink his approach to the toughest Major of the lot.
