WWE should cherish Brock Lesnar returning to UFC with their Universal title in his grasp

BROCK Lesnar shocked MMA fans over the weekend when he stormed the octagon at UFC 226.

He cut an expletive-filled promo and shoved Daniel Cormier to set up a heavyweight title fight next year - but WWE fans were less shocked to see The Beast back in the octagon.

Between Lesnar’s depleting appearances, Paul Heyman’s kayfabe social media, and Lesnar’s real-life contract wrangling, fans suspected he was heading back to UFC.

But Brock is current (reigning, defending, undisputed etc) Universal Champion.

Lesnar’s return to UFC will prompt fan speculation that Lesnar is soon finished with WWE – and that he should drop the Universal Championship.

Surely he can’t walk into a UFC fight as a top tier WWE champ? It will ruin the cred of the Universal belt. It will expose the business of pro wrestling. It’s an insult to the fans.

All completely wrong, of course. If Brock Lesnar went into UFC as Universal Champion, it would be sensational for WWE.

If anything, this is a reason to keep the Universal Championship on Brock until he can return to UFC next January.

(January is the earliest Brock can return to UFC – he’s still sitting out a doping test suspension after his last fight against Mark Hunt.)

Fan resentment for Brock has been growing since before WrestleMania.

Fans turned on his match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, convinced they knew that Reigns would win and Brock was leaving WWE.

Wrong again. Lesnar signed a contract extension and defeated Reigns at both ‘Mania and the Greatest Royal Rumble in April. Brock hasn’t been on WWE TV since.

Paul Heyman recently posted on social media that there’s no decent competition on Raw, so Brock will only show up to defend his title when he feels like it.

There’s even been speculation about whether or not Brock will even appear at SummerSlam – WWE’s second biggest PPV of the year.

Fans have convinced themselves that Brock only cares about the money and it’s a middle finger to the business that he only shows up when he can be bothered.

But we need to pick fact from fiction. Heyman’s crafty social media activity is pure storyline.

And there’s one person who decides when and where Brock defends his title – Vince McMahon.

Brock Lesnar has always been about the money. He’s one of the smartest businessmen in the history of both pro wrestling and MMA.

He knows how to drive up his value and seal the deal when it comes to contracts.

(Case in point: making noise about a UFC return before ‘Mania, then signing a contract extension to swerve the fans and retain the title.)

For all the fan complaining that Lesnar is disrespecting WWE with his absence and apathy, he’s still the company’s most legitimate mainstream attraction.

You only need to look at the number of headlines and huge buzz around his surprise UFC appearance. When it comes to box office, Brock truly is The Beast.

And don’t misinterpret Brock’s absence from WWE as a refusal to do business. He’s not afraid to lay down.

He lost his first match back in WWE to John Cena at Extreme Rules in 2013. He also lost a humiliating 90-second squash match to Goldberg at Survivor Series 2016.

Besides, do we really need the Universal Championship on Raw every single week?

We already have the proper WWE Champion – AJ Styles – on SmackDown, while Raw has Intercontinental, Tag Team and Women’s belts.

As a once-in-a-blue-moon attraction around the waist of Lesnar, the Universal title is unique – a championship unlike any others, when the abundance of other titles means they ultimately mean less.

I’m not suggesting Brock literally walk into UFC with a WWE belt around his waist – that won’t happen – but imagine if he was still reigning Universal Champion when he does fight Daniel Cormier.

If he wins, it will bring a legitimacy to the Universal belt, making him the first ever dual WWE/UFC champion – what a coup that would be for WWE’s mainstream cred.

If he loses, it would be a priceless opportunity for a never-before-done storyline: he can return to WWE humiliated, broken, or looking to reassert his dominance.

Brock Lesnar’s current contract ends at the end of August, but at a time when fans are demanding WWE end Brock’s title reign, WWE should do the opposite: extend his contract and keep the belt on him.

To have a WWE champion compete in UFC would be an unprecedented move – and bring unprecedented attention on WWE and its biggest star.

Brock might have an itch for returning to the octagon, but don’t think WWE can’t offer up a contract that could change the business and put WWE and UFC head-to-head.

After all, Brock Lesnar is all about the money.
