ALEX HALES returns to his home ground on Tuesday desperate to pile on the runs and regain his place as England opener.
Hales will bat at No.3 against Australia at Trent Bridge – but he knows he will be dropped as soon as Ben Stokes regains full fitness.

So his route into the first-choice World Cup team next summer is to dislodge either Jason Roy or Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order.
Hales was regular first-choice opener for three years following his debut in 2014 and broke the England all-time record with 171 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in August 2016.
But he opened the door when he was banned for two games late last summer following his night out with Ben Stokes.
Roy and Bairstow scored a stack of runs in his absence – and have been together ever since.
As England try to secure the series with a third straight win over the Aussies, Hales said: “I’ve got to try to get my place back, it’s up to me. Those two have come in and done really well.

“Jonny was knocking the door down for a few years and, every time he got a chance, he took it. I guess now I’m in that position where I’m on the fringes and any chance I can get, it’s up to me to convert into big runs and put some pressure on those two.
“Ben will probably come in for me when he’s fit. So I have to use these last three games of the series against Australia well and score as many runs as possible.

“My aim is to regain a permanent place ahead of World Cup, absolutely. But we have a very strong squad and there are some seriously talented players who can’t even get in the 15-man squad.
“There’s good, healthy competition which keeps everyone on their toes and striving to improve.”
Hales, 29, has given up red ball cricket for the time being to concentrate on the shorter formats.

He added: “I have to use the time wisely, finding areas of my games to practice and working in the gym. At the moment, it’s unknown territory in terms of whether I’ll be able to hit enough balls but I’m happy with my decision and will reassess in 18 months.”
Meanwhile, Chris Woakes is confident of being fit within two or three weeks as he recovers from a torn thigh muscle and a problem with his right knee.
The Warwickshire all-rounder was given an injection in the knee last week and insisted: “I’ve actually had the knee problem for eight or nine years and it doesn’t stop me from playing cricket. It feels a million dollars compared to a couple of weeks ago.”

Woakes was supporting the Chance to Shine charity during Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week which gives thousands of children the chance to play and learn through cricket.
Stokes, recovering from a torn hamstring, expects to be fit for the T20 matches against India early next month.
England one-day captain Eoin Morgan has recovered from the back spasm that kept him out of the 38-run win in Cardiff on Saturday.
