EDDIE JONES was pulling knives from his back as he came out fighting for his England future.
The Red Rose chief said he would not quit — just 24 hours after Twickenham bosses rejected the chance to discuss his position.
Fans started calling for the Aussie’s head as England lost the series to South Africa and slid down the world rankings to sixth.
But after six defeats in a row, dogged Jones said: “When you are doing well, everyone pats you on the back, and when you are not doing well, you’re pulling knives out of your back.
“These are the great periods. These are the periods you look forward to where everyone thinks you are done and you have to find a way to win.
“I’m enjoying it, loving it, absolutely loving it. The only thing I do is try to coach the team well.
"That’s what I’m paid to do and that’s what I try to do every day.
“If someone decides that’s not good enough, then they decide.”
Asked if he needed the total backing of the RFU boss Steve Brown, Jones added: “I chat to him regularly. I don’t ask for his full support. I do my job.”
Stuart Barnes, ex-England fly-half turned pundit, called for the RFU to dump Jones after a nightmare 2018, including their worst ever Six Nations.
Barnes said: “England are in need of immediate action.
“It appears that a new voice is needed and the biggest risk is to take no risk.”
Jones will have to ride out this rough period while also avoiding a 3-0 series whitewash ahead of the last Test against the Springboks on Saturday.
But the coach insists he predicted this turmoil, yet hasn’t stopped it.
He added: “Have we gone backwards? Of course we have, because we’ve started a new team.
“You’re never glad, but the reality is you’re always going to get it. I 100 per cent knew it was coming. You cannot expect to keep winning.
“And in a lot of the wins we had, luck went on our side. You get that. Then you have other periods when you don’t get any luck.
“Every team I’ve ever been involved with, which has been a champion team, goes through this.”
South Africa are licking their lips after No 8 Billy Vunipola went home yesterday with a broken arm.
Boks forward Duane Vermeulen said: “Billy is England’s go-forward guy and without him they struggled. It is a big loss.”
