McGregor could regain his lightweight crown against Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

But he has a legal wrangle to settle first following an attack on a UFC bus in New York carrying the Russian champ.

The Irish superstar and his co-defendant Cian Cowley were freed on bail after a brief court appearance on Thursday.

They are due back in court on July 26 and prosecutors confirmed that plea negotiations are ongoing.

Addressing reporters outside court, McGregor said: "I regret my actions that led me here today.

"I understand the seriousness of this matter and I’m hopeful it gets resolved soon. Thank you every one."

Both men were involved in a vicious melee at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn back in April.

Footage showed McGregor hurling a trolley at a bus full of fighters following a press conference for UFC 223.

Fighters Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg were injured by shattered glass and unable to compete in the event.

The UFC has yet to punish McGregor for the attack but boss Dana White said he would meet with the two-weight champion after the hearing.

The UFC brawler and his co-accused mate were seen arriving at Dublin airport on Tuesday after being charged with assault in April.

But McGregor, believed to be worth around £75million, appeared to poke fun at their upcoming court appearance.

Cian earned his first professional victory at the Brave 13 MMA event in Belfast on Saturday June 9.

McGregor congratulated his young protégé after the win and made light of his ongoing legal situation.
