Elliott Whitehead and Jake Connor star as England win in Denver

ELLIOTT Whitehead and Jake Connor were England’s American dreams as they were devastating in Denver.

Wayne Bennett’s men started their road to the next World Cup after agonisingly losing last year’s final 6-0 to Australia in the unlikely surroundings of Mile High Stadium, home of NFL giants Denver Broncos.

But back-rower Whitehead and debutant Connor made sure they were not blown off course, with the former grabbing a double and the latter scoring one try and making two.

Boss Bennett again caused a stir by naming Wigan back-rower John Bateman at centre, while debutants Connor and Tommy Makinson made the bench.

However, the Kiwis under new coach Michael Maguire were hell bent on getting over last year’s disaster, which saw them exit in the quarter-finals.

It did not start well as after what can be best described as a ‘dodgy’ rendition of the national anthems, especially New Zealand’s, Issac Luke booted the kick-off out on the full.

But Esan Marsters’ debut try and Luke’s near miss put England on notice, they had to improve despite Tom Burgess going close.

And Jamayne Isaako should have increased the advantage after Marsters’ break, only to spill the pass with the line begging. – Dallin Watene-Zelezniak made no such mistake with the first of his double.

Thankfully, Ryan Hall hit back with a diving finish at the corner and Elliott Whitehead crashed through, both from Connor passes.

When Gareth Widdop booted a penalty after Luke stupidly stood on Bateman’s hand, Bennett’s side was level 12-12. His kick from halfway that sailed over after Whitehead’s second put England two scores ahead.

On the hour, Connor ghosted through challenges and ignored Stefan Ratchford’s support to go over as England cut loose, with Whitehead sending Makinson over before Bateman’s finishing try and a missed conversion from of all people James Graham!
