JEAN-ERIC VERGNE mocked the current state of English sports and tried piling the pressure on Brit Sam Bird ahead of their Formula E title showdown in New York.

The Frenchman bragged about his nation's position in the World Cup final while pointing out Lewis Hamilton's shortcomings at Silverstone - and that no Englishman will become champion this year at Wimbledon.

Vergne is leading the drivers' championship ahead of the season finale in New York this weekend, which is a double-header on Saturday and Sunday.

Bird, who won both races in New York last year, trails his former team-mate by 23 points - this was the same gap last season ahead of the last two races, which saw Lucas Di Grassi come from behind to nab the title off Sebastien Buemi.

But despite potentially losing his lead on the final weekend of a season he has dominated, Vergne insists all the pressure is on Bird to cause an upset and fly the English flag in the US.

The Techeetah driver said: "I don't think all the pressure is on me.

"Lewis Hamilton lost the Silverstone Grand Prix last weekend, no English tennis player can win Wimbledon and England cannot win the World Cup.

"So the only world championship England can win is with Sam this weekend, so I feel he has all the pressure on his shoulders from England."

Meanwhile, Bird disagrees and says regardless of what happens in streets of New York across the weekend, he will hold his head up high.

The DS Virgin driver said: "No [it's not a high-pressure weekend], I see it as the other way, going into this championship I had very little expectation for what we can achieve.

"I feel like we have massively over achieved and it's great to be in this position.

"Of course I am going to try and fight, I will give it my best and if it doesn't happen I will still hold my head up very high and say I have had a great season."
