IAN POULTER let rip at the abusive New York fan - and the 'clowns' running the US Golf Association - before the final round at Shinnecock Hills.
Poulter, who set off four shots off the lead at seven over par, revealed that he had been heckled on every hole at this US Open.
He has always been the man American fans love to hate at Ryder Cups because of his unbridled passion – and his ability to get the job done.
The beer-filled New Yorkers have turned on him again, and Poulter warned things could turn really ugly when the Ryder Cup is held at nearby Bethpage in 2024 – especially as he could easily be the European captain by then
Poulter, 42, voiced his disgust via Twitter. He fumed: “Verbally abused on every hole does get a little old.. That’s not really golf either. Ryder Cup in 2024 COULD become a little silly.”
Poulter said the USGA had already made themselves look foolish with the much-criticised course set-up for the third round, when the pin positions proved increasingly treacherous as the green dried out.
It seemed they had not learned the lessons of 2004, when Shinnecock was slammed as unfair. They were forced to start watering the hard-baked greens after play began because balls kept rolling off the putting surface.
This time it proved a much easier course for the early starters on day three.
Americans Daniel Berger and Tony Finau both shooting four under par 66s to play their way into the final group at three over – after starting the day ELEVEN shots of the lead.
They had finished long before the halfway pace-setters teed off – and the final five groups played the course in a combined 57 over par to come back to the pack.
USGA chief Miek Davis offered a half-hearted apology, saying if they had been allowed a “mulligan” – a free second chance - they might not have placed some of the flags so close to the wicked slopes at Shinnecock.
Poulter added: “Still we never hear the word SORRY. When I F@&$ up I have to apologize. Not the @USGA
“I’m not sure i could possibly comment without using words which shouldn’t be seen... just like some of those pins.
“Thanks guys - did Bozo set the course up or are the @USGA going to accept responsibility or just say “IF WE HAD A MULLIGAN” I would have liked about 6 mulligans today. But they are not allowed at this level
“Just grow a set of balls and say we £€¥#ed it up again... You don’t get mulligan’s in business at this level. how can this team keep doing this without consequences.
“Disappointing” @USGA @usopengolf why are mistake still being made at this level. Was that fun to watch guys ? I’m only 4 behind & can still win this.”
The USGA responded by watering the greens after play ended in the third round, and again before the start of round four.
The holes were also cut in more accessible spots, and the early signs were that the third day farce was unlikely to be repeated.
