WWE Extreme Rules: Will Kevin Owens survive against Braun Strowman and can Team Hell No win the gold at Extreme Rules?

The name of the picture

THIS Sunday WWE gets hardcore with Extreme Rules – the one night of the year it throws out the rulebook for wild stipulations and bonkers action.

Sun Sport runs down the matches and predicts how the action will go down:

AJ Styles will defend the strap against Rusev

AJ Styles will defend the strap against Rusev

WWE Championship Match - AJ Styles (c) v Rusev

Background: Rusev beat The Miz, Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe, and Big E in a Gauntlet Match to become number one contender.

He’s since locked AJ Styles in the Accolade, and notched up a big win in tag team action this week on SmackDown. But can he do the same when the title is on the line?

Sun Sport Predicts: Probably not. This is stop-gap booking for AJ before he moves onto to whoever his SummerSlam opponent will be (Samoa Joe, if the rumours are true).

Rusev’s popular with the fans and a great worker, but he’s not the right man to dethrone AJ Styles.

Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley go for each other

Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley go for each other

Roman Reigns v Bobby Lashley

Background: It’s been a clash of egos as Reigns and Lashley have squabbled over who should challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

The two have rubbed each the wrong as reluctant tag partners and had a wild pull-apart brawl of Raw this past Monday.

Sun Sport Predicts: This feels like a win for Bobby Lashley. Reigns has already challenged Lesnar twice at major events this year and Lashley’s push is still going strong.

But should either man be facing “The Beast”? This is essentially a match between two babyfaces that fans don’t want to cheer.

Team Hell No will reunite to battle for the tag belts

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match - The Bludgeon Brothers v Team Hell No

Background: Kane made a surprise return to save Daniel Bryan from a beating at the hands of the Bludgeons, reforming Team Hell No after five years.

Bryan and Kane have already beaten The Usos and were the deciding factor in a big 10-man tag match on SmackDown. Can they beat the all-powerful Bludgeons when it counts?

Sun Sport Predicts: It’s fun to see Team Hell No back, but this nostalgia act has a limited shelf life.

We say put the belts on them for a quick title run before Kane eithers turns on Bryan, or Bryan moves onto a singles feud with The Miz.

Extreme Rules Match for the Raw Women’s Championship - Alexa Bliss (C) v Nia Jax

Background: Just hours after winning Money in the Bank, Alexa cashed in and stole the title from Jax – and made an enemy of Ronda Rousey in the process.

Now they’ll put an end to their long-running feud – and Ronda Rousey (still suspended from action for her assault on Bliss) will be sat ringside.

Sun Sport Predicts: Alexa’s about to take a hellacious beating at the hands of Nia– but she’ll also find a way to escape with the title.

This match is more about fuelling the feud between Alexa and Ronda Rousey, who’s sure to jump the barrier and get involved.

Can Kevin Owens survive a Steel Cage clash with Braun Strowman

Steel Cage Match - Braun Strowman v Kevin Owens

Background: This started when KO tried to befriend “The Monster Amongst Men” – a big mistake.

First Braun flipped KO’s car over, then locked him a portable toilet and threw it off the Raw stage.

Sun Sport Predicts: Owens might be able to escape and win, but this won’t be anything more than a comedy pummeling for KO.

Expect Braun to toss him around the ring (and into the cage) like a 275lb rag doll.

Asuka will attempt to take the gold from Carmella

Asuka will attempt to take the gold from Carmella

SmackDown Women’s Championship Match - With James Ellsworth suspended in a shark cage - Carmella (c) v Asuka

Background: Ellsworth returned at Money in the Bank to help Carmella win – and he’s since faced Asuka in two separate comedy matchups on SmackDown.

But he won’t be able to interfere in this one as he’ll hanging above the ring in a shark cage.

Sun Sport Predicts: Ellsworth might be locked in a cage, but the safe money’s on him still managing to help Carmella cheat and defeat “The Empress of Tomorrow”.

It’s fun to have Ellsworth back of course, but isn’t it time WWE put a title on Asuka? This daft storyline isn’t doing much for her killer reputation.

The B-Team are going for gold at Extreme Rules

The B-Team are going for gold at Extreme Rules

Raw Tag Team Championship Match - Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt (c) v The B-Team

Background: Amazingly, the former Miztourage – Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas – are undefeated since changing their name to the B-Team.

Now they‘re number one contenders to the Raw titles and have even scored singles victories over Matt Hardy.

Sun Sport Predicts: We’d love to see the B-Team win the titles here, but it feels like WWE will keep the belts on Hardy and Wyatt.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the storyline though. There’s big potential in this feud with real-life brothers Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas.

Dolph Ziggler versus Seth Rollins could steal the show

Dolph Ziggler versus Seth Rollins could steal the show

30-Minute Iron Man Match for the Intercontinental Championship - Dolph Ziggler (c) v Seth Rollins

Background: Rollins has been on fire lately, but Ziggler defeated him for the IC belt with an assist from Drew McIntyre.

Drew also beat Seth to earn a spot ringside at Extreme Rules. Can the 6’5” Scotsman help tip the balance for Ziggler once again?

Sun Sport Predicts: There’s no question this will be match of the night – expect a high-octane thriller packed with big spots and both near and actual falls.

Drew McIntyre has reinvigorated Dolph’s career, so the safe money’s on Drew interfering to help Dolph retain to continue this feud with Rollins.

Jeff Hardy defends his US Title against Shinsuke Nakamura

Jeff Hardy defends his US Title against Shinsuke Nakamura

United States Championship Match - Jeff Hardy (c) v Shinsuke Nakamura

Background: Hardy and Nak have clashed in both singles and tag team action of SmackDown – and Hardy’s been the victim of Shinsuke’s patented low blow.

Sun Sport Predicts: Titles shouldn’t matter to a wrestler as strong as Nakamura, but he’s failed in every title challenger on the main roster so far.

Nakamura has to win this match – you can only lose so many times before fans stop caring (just ask Bray Wyatt). Besides, Hardy’s been a dud so far as US champ.

Raw constable Baron Corbin nails Balor with an elbow

Raw constable Baron Corbin nails Balor with an elbow

Finn Balor v “Constable” Baron Corbin

Background: Balor has found himself the target of Corbin’s newfound authority, which seems to have started with Balor mocking Corbin’s waistcoat. Don’t tell Gareth Southgate.

Sun Sport Predicts: Anything other than a win for Balor will be a waste of everyone’s time.

Corbin’s “Constable” role has been utterly pointless and he’s amongst the most boring acts clogging up the Raw roster right now.
