Her statement, posted on the @BabyBoycs account, read: "The surgeon says the operation was a success and has now allowed him home to recover from the invasive surgery.

"This will take some time so he will not be commentating at the start of the England v India Test match series but hopes to be back at work for the 3rd Test match at Nottingham."

Boycott, nicknamed 'Fiery', played 108 Tests for England between 1964 and 1982, scoring 8,114 runs at an average of 47.72, while notching up 22 centuries.

Responding to a post from a well-wisher, Boycott said he was "resting", with his daughter Emma typing the replies on his behalf.

A message on the official BBC Test Match Special Twitter account read: "We wish @GeoffreyBoycott a speedy recovery & look forward to welcoming you back into the @bbctms box soon."

BBC colleague Michael Vaughan, also a former England and Yorkshire skipper wrote on Twitter: "Digin Geoffrey... we'll miss you lots."

Pal and fellow BBC TMS presenter Jonathan Agnew added: "I went to visit the old so and so this morning and can confirm that he’s in rude health and will probably outlive all of us."

"My sympathy lies with Rachael, who has to nurse him! (Great to see you looking so well, Fiery. Treat this convalescence like one of your innings....SLOW x)."

Boycott quipped to one post from a well-wisher that Agnew had the cheek "take the mickey" when he dropped by to pay him a visit.

Piers Morgan tweeted: "Speedy recovery Sir Geoffrey."
